Discovery Channel's planned spectacle featuring a man jumping off the top of Mount Everest — equipped with nothing but a wing suit — is now cancelled after an avalanche last week that killed 13 Sherpas. The avalanche was the most lethal accident in the history of the world's tallest mountain.

The program was slated to air on May 11.

Discovery publicly announced the cancellation on the stunt's official website.

In light of the overwhelming tragedy at Mount Everest and out of respect for the families of the fallen, Discovery Channel will not be going forward with Everest Jump Live. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the whole Sherpa community.

The much-hyped program was to feature mountain climber Joby Ogwyn scaling the side of Everest and then jumping off its peak, with Discovery broadcasting his dangerous descent on live television.

The Weather Channel's Jim Cantore was slated to make an appearance on the program, providing weather forecasts for the event.
