What Is a "Record Low Maximum," Anyway?
Over the next few days, meteorologists will make a fuss about "record low maximum" temperatures being achieved in cities across the southeast. What does that term mean, anyway?
A "record low maximum" means the lowest high temperature ever recorded on a particular date. For example, Greenwood, Mississippi achieved its all-time record low maximum temperature for July with a high of just 72 degrees yesterday. A "record high minimum," on the other hand, means the highest low temperature ever recorded on a date.
The animation at the top of this post shows all of the record highs and record lows set over the past week. Record low maximum records are a little harder to come by as a collection. They should be available on the NCDC's website within the next week.
