The annual list of Gawker Heroes came out this morning, and I chose female meteorologists to hold a much-deserved spot on the list. Meteorologists like Rhonda Lee and Ginger Zee and Sue Palka and hundreds of others are superb scientists who have a hugely positive influence on young women in the United States.

In the past year, two high-profile television meteorologists have told people to evacuate from the relative safety of their homes to get out of the way of an oncoming tornado. That is the worst thing you could do, and this dangerous advice will get people killed one day.

Jonathan Zimmerman, a professor for New York University and author of an upcoming "international history of sex education," has some very serious words for television weathermen: straighten up and fly right, you bozos.

A tornado warning accuracy rate of 70% and a 24-hour forecast accuracy of 94% makes meteorologists more accurate in their field, on average, than doctors who make cancer diagnoses and some professional athletes (again, on average).
