Remember when the southern Plains had so much heavy rain this spring that the storms straight-up murdered their years-long drought in something like four weeks? The good ol’ days! The region is starting to slip back into a drought, but it’s not too late for things to improve again.

A quick series of storm systems approaching the West Coast from the Pacific will bring some beneficial rainfall to most of California and Oregon over the next week. Populated areas of northern California and western Oregon could see several inches of rain, with more at higher elevations.

If you thought yesterday's heavy rain was bad, wait until you see this: Islip, New York recorded more than 13 inches of rain this morning, 11 inches of which fell in just three hours. That breaks the all-time New York State record for the most rain recorded in a 24-hour period.

Areas south of Baltimore, Maryland got slammed with record-breaking rainfall this afternoon, with some areas just south of the city seeing a foot of rain in just one day. What's even more amazing is that while one town saw twelve inches of rain, areas just a few miles away got just one inch.

Major flooding is ongoing near Baltimore this afternoon after areas south of town have seen more than seven inches of rain in a short period of time, and amounts could approach ten inches before the storms stop. A similar situation unfolded in Detroit last night.

Oklahoma could see more than eight inches of rain over the next seven days if current forecasts hold true. That much rain over the Plains states would do wonders toward alleviating the extreme to exceptional drought plaguing the region.

There's heavy rain, and then there's heavy rain. The storms that hit southern Alabama last night were leftovers from the tornado outbreak earlier in the day, but they packed one heck of a punch. Mobile, Alabama saw 3 inches of rain in just 25 minutes.
