The Extreme Cost of Hurricanes Over the Past Ten Years
Students at the University of North Carolina have developed a great infographic to visualize the more than $310 billion in damages caused by landfalling hurricanes in the United States over the past ten years.
Even though the country has seen hundreds of billions of dollars in damages from hurricanes over the past decade, coastal residents are fairly lucky that there's been a recent drought in hurricane landfalls. This summer's Hurricane Arthur was the strongest storm to make landfall since Ike back in 2008. The last time a major hurricane (category three or stronger) struck was Wilma back in 2005.
However, it doesn't take a major hurricane to produce major damage. As this infographic shows, even storms smaller than Katrina or Sandy are able to take a huge financial toll.
