155 MPH Hurricane Amanda Breaks Record for Strongest May Storm

The eastern Pacific's Hurricane Amanda exploded into an intense category 4 hurricane last night with winds of 155 MPH. The storm's strength makes it the most intense hurricane ever recorded during the month of May in the eastern Pacific. Thankfully, Amanda poses no threat to land.

Slow-Moving Storms Prompt Flash Flood Warning in New York City, Newark

A flash flood warning is in effect for areas around and including New York City and Newark, New Jersey as a slow-moving thunderstorm continues to drop a relatively large amount of rain in a short period of time. 2-3 inches of rain have fallen near Newark in the past few hours.

A thunderstorm near Spartanburg, South Carolina just dropped 2.50" hail. That's the size of a tennis ball. Another severe storm, pictured above, is approaching Myrtle Beach at 5:05PM. If you live in the Carolinas, especially along/east of I-85 in South Carolina and along I-95 in North Carolina, keeps a close watch on the storms this evening.

Here are all 489 severe weather warnings issued in the past 7 days as of midnight-ish. Severe thunderstorm warnings are blue, tornado warnings are red, flash flood warnings are green. An active couple of days, but still quiet for May. More active weather is expected on Friday in the southeast and southwest.

At 2:40PM MDT, an intense, tornado-warned supercell was approaching Denver International Airport with tennis ball size hail. It's absolutely phenomenal looking on radar, with a textbook shape and wind pattern. A confirmed tornado was spotted near Watkins, CO at 2:51PM MDT.

May is finally acting like May across much of the country today. The odds of seeing large hail and damaging winds are 30x higher than normal in both the Mile High City and the Nation's Capital this afternoon, respectively. Some tornadoes are also possible, especially around Denver, but the risk is starting to drop a bit around D.C.
