Strong Storms Will Hit D.C., Baltimore, Philly During Today's Rush Hour

Dennis Mersereau · 06/23/15 03:38PM

You can swim through the air on the East Coast this afternoon. It’s a typical hot, muggy summer afternoon, and an approaching cold front is allowing this soupy air to explode skyward and trigger some nasty thunderstorms. It looks like the storms will arrive in the megalopolis just in time for rush hour, of course.

Dennis Mersereau · 06/08/15 02:25PM

Tornadoes are possible in any of the severe thunderstorms that blow across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast this afternoon, with the greatest risk existing across a stretch of land from Virginia to Vermont. Any of the storms that pop-up this afternoon also carry the risk for damaging winds and large hail.

Severe Storms Threatening Northeast, May Hit Philly & NYC Near Rush Hour

Dennis Mersereau · 05/27/15 01:50PM

A line of thunderstorms rolling into the Northeast has the potential to produce wind gusts to 70 MPH and hail to the size of ping pong balls as they move through. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect ahead of the storms, which could impact the heavily-populated I-95 corridor around rush hour.

Forecasters did a good job predicting Friday's snow, with some communities clocking in on the higher end of the forecasts. Central Park saw three inches, Philadelphia recorded four, an inch fell in Baltimore, and D.C. only saw a dusting. The big winner was Freehold, New Jersey, with 7.2 inches of snow.

Of Course It's Going to Snow Tomorrow, the First Day of Spring

Dennis Mersereau · 03/19/15 05:15PM

Forecasters have growing confidence that it's going to snow tomorrow in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Some cities from Pennsylvania to Long Island could see five or more inches of snow by the time it's over on Friday night. Oh, and tomorrow is the first day of spring. Nature has a twisted sense of humor.

Southern Rains Will Lead to Weekend Snow in New England, I'm So Sorry

Dennis Mersereau · 03/12/15 03:20PM

The thing about March is that it lures you in with springlike temperatures, chirping birds, bumbling bees, and just when you start to let down your guard—WHAM!—you get smacked with a winter storm. It happens almost every year, but I am so sorry to say that it's probably going to snow this weekend.

A Brutal Cold Snap and a Blizzard or Two Are Possible Over the Next Week

Dennis Mersereau · 02/12/15 04:37PM

Much of the eastern U.S. is about to plunge into the coldest wave of Arctic air we've seen this winter, and for many, it could feature more sustained cold temperatures than we saw during the Great Polar Vortex Panic of 2014. If that isn't bad enough, the east could see a couple of disruptive winter storms next week.

Active Weekend Promises Heavy Northeast Snow, More West Coast Rain

Dennis Mersereau · 02/06/15 04:41PM

As we make our way into the sixth weekend of the year, the weather is getting pretty active on either end of the United States. The west is basking in some much-needed rain, while the northeast is getting ready for yet another snowstorm this weekend, all while residents of Denver are wearing shorts.

Frozen Tundra Formerly Called the Northeast Braces for Weekend Snowstorm

Dennis Mersereau · 02/05/15 05:05PM

Models are showing yet another multi-day winter storm in the Northeast this weekend. Accumulations could reach double-digits by Monday night, and that might not even be the worst thing to happen next week. We could see "Dennis Quaid hiking up I-95 to save Jake Gyllenhaal" levels of cold around Valentine's Day. Isn't winter fun?

Dennis Mersereau · 01/27/15 06:28PM

The Blizzard of 2015 was Boston's third largest snowstorm on record, with at least 26.0" at the airport. New York reported 9.8" in Central Park, 11.4" at LaGuardia, 10.7" at JFK, and 11.8" at the Bronx Zoo. Southampton (on eastern Long Island) saw 28.8" of snow. The big winner/loser was 35.0" in Acton, Massachusetts.

This beast of a nor'easter looks incredible on infrared satellite imagery this evening, and the storm is only in its infancy. Conditions will rapidly deteriorate in locations that haven't gone down hill already. Locations caught under the deformation zone (heaviest persistent bands) will see two or more feet. Stay safe and enjoy.

What You Need to Know About Today's "Crippling" Blizzard: Monday Update

Dennis Mersereau · 01/26/15 06:45AM

After a short night of restless sleep, it appears that forecasters are still predicting the end of the world in the Northeast this evening. If you haven't panicked yet, you have several hours to do so before it's too late. Hug your children. Hoard booze. This is not a drill. Here's what you need to know to make it through the storm.

Major Blizzard Set to Dump Feet of Snow on New York City and Boston

Dennis Mersereau · 01/25/15 12:59PM

All signs point to a significant blizzard in the Northeast on Monday night and Tuesday, with major cities like New York and Boston probably measuring snow in feet by the time the storm clears out. If the forecast pans out, this will be one of the most significant winter storms we've seen in quite a few years.

Dennis Mersereau · 01/24/15 03:12PM

Rumors are running rampant about a potential blizzard in the Northeast on Tuesday. The last two runs of the European model produce a crippling snowfall across heavily populated areas. I'm going to wait until tomorrow afternoon's model runs before I dive in and start sounding the alarm, but area residents should get ready just in case.

Here's What You Need to Know About This Weekend's East Coast Snowstorm

Dennis Mersereau · 01/23/15 03:03PM

A snow and ice storm will disrupt travel in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast tonight and tomorrow, but it's nothing abnormal for this time of the year. However, "nothing abnormal" doesn't mean crap when you're sliding sideways into a ditch on I-95. Here's what you need to know to stay ahead of this weekend's weather.

Tricky Weekend Storm Will Bring Heavy Rain and Snow to the I-95 Corridor

Dennis Mersereau · 01/22/15 03:59PM

I hope you enjoyed the relatively nice weather we've seen for the past few days, because things are going to change in a hurry. A major storm is trekking across Texas this afternoon on its way to the eastern seaboard, and it will culminate in what could be a decent snow event in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic this weekend.

Dennis Mersereau · 01/02/15 04:56PM

An intense outbreak of cold weather will descend on the eastern two-thirds of the country next week, with widespread low temperatures in the single digits and below zero for a couple of days. Lows in the teens are even possible as far south as Alabama and Mississippi.
