The National Weather Service reports that a tornado was spotted around 235PM EDT just west of the Miami Airport in southeastern Florida, moving northeast through the suburbs of Miami proper. Storm chasers in Orrick, Missouri caught this tornado ripping the roofs off of farm buildings yesterday afternoon. Today is the 15th anniversary of the devastating F5 tornado that tore through Moore, Bridge Creek, and Newcastle in Oklahoma on May 3, 1999. The tornado remains the strongest ever observed (a Doppler-on-Wheels measured winds of 301 MPH) and the analog to which all major tornadoes were compared up until Joplin in 2011. Over ten thousand structures were damaged or destroyed in the storm, and three dozen people lost their lives.

New Radar Technology Confirms Damaging Tornado in the Dead of Night

The only thing more dangerous than a tornado is a tornado that occurs at night. People have some weird need to want to see the tornado before they seek shelter or take any other action. Seeing a tornado at night is usually almost impossible, but last night it wasn't. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service in Jackson, Mississippi were able to confirm the presence of a damaging tornado last night based completely on radar data, proving the effectiveness of its new dual-polarization technology.
