WeatherNation reports that one woman is dead and seven more were injured in Colorado's Rocky Mountain National Park due to a lightning strike this afternoon. This is the eighth lightning-related death in the United States so far this year.

The Republic quotes officials as saying that the incident occurred around 1:00 PM along the Ute Trail, a popular destination for hikers located off of Trail Ridge Road about 60 miles northwest of Denver.

Lightning kills an average of 20 to 25 people per year, with the number declining almost every year since 1943's high of 432 thanks to both the advent of Doppler weather radar and better forecasts and warnings.
