A line of thunderstorms rolling into the Northeast has the potential to produce wind gusts to 70 MPH and hail to the size of ping pong balls as they move through. A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect ahead of the storms, which could impact the heavily-populated I-95 corridor around rush hour.

People will go to any length for a little bit of internet fame, like setting your crotch on fire, jumping off a building, or planking on train tracks. Thankfully, there are less painful ways to achieve notoriety: lie through your teeth! Some sorry individual froze a water balloon yesterday and tried to pass it off as hail.

Many millions of us will experience severe thunderstorms over the coming weeks and months. When one of these intense storms crops up, a number of you will find yourselves driving into a major hailstorm, during which you may feel the urge to park under an overpass to protect your car. Don’t.

It looks like nature is finally catching up with the calendar, as the southern and central portions of the United States are facing a risk for severe thunderstorms every day through Friday. Unfortunately for residents and vehicles alike, April promises to be more active than this underwhelming March.

Today is the second day of a two-part severe weather outbreak across the Plains states, with giant thunderstorms blowing up over Oklahoma and Arkansas. The storms have the potential to produce hail up to the size of tennis balls, so naturally, storm chasers are speeding towards them in hopes of catching nature at its fiercest.

A meteorologist on board an American Eagle jet taxiing to the runway in Abilene, Texas yesterday took a video of golf ball size hail pounding the Embraer ERJ-145 for more than seven minutes while they sat on the taxiway. The plane had to turn back to the gate because of the damage.

Storm chasing website Extreme Instability has some absolutely incredible pictures of hail damage he saw in Blair, Nebraska, which is where baseball to softball size hail fell on Tuesday. The hailstorm totaled cars, destroyed vegetation, and left homes looking like they were shelled by tanks.

The intense hailstorms that struck Colorado a couple of weeks ago left behind major damage to tens of thousands of cars, homes, airplanes, and just about everything else that wasn't protected from the stones that approached the size of tennis balls at times. Insured losses are now estimated to clock in at over $100 million.

This picture is exhibit A, and the only example you need. "This is what baseball-size hail and 70+ mph winds can do to a home," says the NWS office in Topeka of a picture of a house in Blair, Nebraska that did not fare well in today's storms.

Rounding out a week of severe weather notable for the incredible amounts of hail it produced — from 5" of hail accumulation in Denver to near-softball size hail falling in New York — it's the eastern Carolinas' turn today to see hail possibly up to the size of baseballs.

Oklahoma City's News9 reporter Kelly Ogle uploaded a picture of this giant air bag protecting his neighbor's car from a potential hailstorm. It's called a Hail Protector and I want one even though I don't have a car.

Softball size hail (4.25" in diameter) fell in Denton, Texas this afternoon. The town, about 35 miles northwest of Dallas, saw the enormous hailstones during an intense severe weather outbreak , and the pictures of the aftermath are pretty incredible.
