Yesterday's severe weather in the central Plains lived up to expectations. The outbreak resulted in around 340 reports of severe weather across ten states, including numerous reports of baseball size hail and damaging winds up to 89 MPH in some spots. The hail was a product of supercells that formed during the afternoon hours, which quickly merged into a very well-organized squall line during the overnight hours and produced a fair amount of wind damage across Nebraska and Kansas.

The Storm Prediction Center has issued a moderate risk for severe weather from Kansas to Iowa this afternoon, as they anticipate strong supercells to develop. These storms will be capable of producing hail larger than baseballs, damaging winds, and possibly a couple of tornadoes.

Severe Thunderstorms Will Threaten New York City by 6:00PM

A line of severe thunderstorms is moving into the New York City metro area from the west, and should start to threaten the city itself around 6:00PM. The storms are capable of producing damaging straight-line winds in excess of 60 MPH, as well as torrential rainfall and "continuous cloud-to-ground lightning."

The atmosphere is primed to spawn strong thunderstorms in the Mid-Atlantic this afternoon and evening, some of which could be severe with large hail, damaging winds, and even a couple of tornadoes possible. Since the storms will occur in heavily populated areas around rush hour, even a small, weak tornado could be dangerous.

Here are all of the severe thunderstorm (blue), tornado (red), and flash flood warnings (green) issued in the past 7 days. To say that this was an "active week" is an understatement. The past week has seen nearly 2,000 severe weather warnings go into effect, and this doesn't include the 200+ warnings that were issued on Sunday.

At 430PM EDT, a rare supercell in central Vermont has a hook echo on it and strong rotation on radar, prompting a tornado warning for Windsor and Rutland Counties. The storm has a history of producing wind damage and hail up to the size of golf balls.

Slow-Moving Storms Prompt Flash Flood Warning in New York City, Newark

A flash flood warning is in effect for areas around and including New York City and Newark, New Jersey as a slow-moving thunderstorm continues to drop a relatively large amount of rain in a short period of time. 2-3 inches of rain have fallen near Newark in the past few hours.

A thunderstorm near Spartanburg, South Carolina just dropped 2.50" hail. That's the size of a tennis ball. Another severe storm, pictured above, is approaching Myrtle Beach at 5:05PM. If you live in the Carolinas, especially along/east of I-85 in South Carolina and along I-95 in North Carolina, keeps a close watch on the storms this evening.
